The Hyundai Elantra was released in 2001 in both saloon and hatchback form, meant to rival the class leaders, the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Vectra.
Two power options are available at launch, 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre petrol engines with a 2.0 litre turbo diesel unit introduced later.
The Elantra was well made relative to its small price tag with affordability, practicality and reliability as its main focus.
Trim levels included Si, GSi, GLSi and CDX. All offering impressive levels with even the base model having driver, passenger and side airbags, ABS with electronic brakeforce distribution, air conditioning and a CD player.
