The Daihatsu Applause was a compact car available in the UK from 1990 to 1996 created as a rival to the then class leaders, the Rover 200, Peugeot 309 and Ford Escort. It employs an unusual layout in that while looking like a 4 door saloon, it is actually a 5 door hatchback with a large tailgate boot capable of holding over 400 litres.
Two versions were available, both using a 1.6 litre 16-valve engine. The first option, 1.6 L, used a carburettor, whilst the 1.6Xi had fuel injection and a catalytic converter. The latter version produced 105bhp.
Later the GXi and GLXi was added to the line-up, which were the same car underneath but the GLXi had better standard equipment.
