We, like many other petrol and diesel car owners will make\nmany excuses as to why we shouldn\u2019t buy an electric car &#8211; \u201cThe range isn\u2019t good\nenough yet\u201d, \u201cThere aren\u2019t enough charge points in the UK\u201d. \u201cI can\u2019t wait 20\nminutes for my car to charge up\u201d, \u201cElectric cars are too expensive at the\nminute\u201d etc. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However,\nas time passes and EV\u2019s improve, those excuses seem less and less valid &#8230; So,\nwe pose the question, should I buy an electric car now\nor wait?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Let\u2019s look at the facts:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Electric Car Range Anxiety <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Range\nanxiety is probably the biggest factor holding people back from purchasing an\nEV. The fact of the matter is, most petrol and diesel cars will easily be able\nto manage 450 miles plus on a full tank of fuel, whereas many of their electric\ncousins would struggle to make half of that distance. It\u2019s true, the range of\nmany electric cars aren\u2019t great, but they are improving. Check out some of the\nranges &nbsp;of the industry leading models\nbelow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nissan\nLeaf &#8211; 168 miles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hyundai\nKona Electric &#8211; 200-300 miles (depending on battery size) Jaguar I-Pace &#8211; 298\nmiles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VW\ne-Golf &#8211; 186 miles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hyundai\nIonic Electric &#8211; 174 miles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tesla\nModel S &#8211; 300+ miles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Renault\nZOE &#8211; 250 miles<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please note you can take these ranges with a pinch of salt, it\u2019s highly unlikely you will be able to get the maximum range out of an EV. However, take 10-15% off the max range and you won\u2019t be far off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Electric Car <\/strong><strong>Charging\nPoints \/ Stations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Closely linked to \u201cRange Anxiety\u201d is charging points and stations. Most UK drivers looking to purchase an EV will worry that there aren\u2019t enough charging points in the UK yet to warrant purchasing one. The worry is that you will end up running out of charge with not a charging point in sight. While this might be true in more rural locations, the UK now has nearly 20,000 charging points spanning across the country. The fact is, you may just have to spend a little more time planning your journey than you would with a petrol or diesel car. Let\u2019s face it, if you\u2019re travelling more than 150 miles in a day, the likelihood is that you will be stopping for a break and the advice is that you should stop to take a break, the perfect time to charge your vehicle. However, as the popularity of EV\u2019s increases you\u2019re likely to see a dramatic increase in high speed charging points across the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charging Speeds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We don\u2019t know why, but we absolutely hate filling up at the petrol station. We don\u2019t know if it\u2019s just our laziness or the fact we loathe parting with so much money for fuel. This one\u2019s a bit of a double edged sword. On the one hand, by owning an EV we would be spending considerably more time in petrol stations (which we guess in a few years will be called charging stations), but on the other hand we would be saving a lot more money from charging than we would filling our current car up with diesel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How long does it\ntake to charge an electric car?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Utilising a rapid charging station, you could charge your EV up to 80% capacity in roughly 30 mins. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much does it\ncost to charge an electric car?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On\naverage, this would cost around \u00a36.50. Charging throughout the night at home\nwould<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>cost you around \u00a33-\u00a35 and would charge at 15 miles of range per hour, for the average electric car, this would take up to 12 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cost of Electric Cars<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes,\nelectric car sale prices are still more expensive than diesel and petrol sale\nprices. However, there are lots of finance and monthly payment options that are\navailable. Plus, the government do offer certain grants to help people switch\nfrom petrol and diesel cars to electric cars. As electric cars become more\npopular and there are more incentives to purchase them, the price will come down.\nIn addition to this, you\u2019re likely to save a lot of money as you won\u2019t be\npurchasing fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the above points show, the proposition of purchasing an electric vehicle is starting to become quite an attractive one. The likelihood is that as range\u2019s increase and the price of EV\u2019s decrease, more and more people will be switching to the eco friendly cars.
