The Smooth Operator
The hub bearing is attached to the wheel bearing by either being bolted or pressed together. The wheel bearing has the very important task of ensuring your road journey runs as smoothly as possible without the risk of tipping over whilst manoeuvring around corners.
Constructed from a set of hardened steel balls lubricated with grease, held together by a metal ring called a race, and sealed with a protective cover, they help the vehicle’s wheels spin at a fast speed.
However due to the harsh treatment the wheel bearings receive over a long period of time, it is certain to conclude that they will become a victim of wear and tear. Rusting caused by water penetration from a worn-down seal or excessive heat, will cause havoc with the lubrication surrounding the steel balls.
Signs of a worn wheel hub include:
• A loud, grinding and vibrating noise
• Abnormal tyre wear
• Wheel alignment being affected
• Uneven brake pad wear
• Wheel vibration
• Abnormal side pull when the brakes are applied
• ABS failure
If you experience any of these symptoms whilst taking to the tarmac, you should seek a replacement as soon as possible. On average, a hub bearing is replaced every 10,000 miles.
At Ultimate Styling we stock a range of wheel bearings and hub bearing kits to fit your vehicle.
