Just when you thought the safety of your car was securely back in your hands, thieves are again in the driving seat with the help of a ‘relay box’ to take possession of your keyless vehicle!
At present, with the Ford Fiesta recognised as the largest target, Cleveland Police have revealed that there has been a report of 90 keyless Fiestas being stolen since December 2017.
Gone are the days of thieves using hammers to break glass or crowbars to prize open the car doors. Even without the need for the key, thieves can simply use a relay box (which can be easily purchased online) to enter your vehicle cleanly, quietly and often without detection.
To begin, a car key emits a signal which can be detected through brick walls, doors and windows, and when brought close to the vehicle will automatically open it, taking away the inconvenience of fumbling around in pockets and bags trying to find it.
A Transceiver/Transmitter when brought within a close enough range of the key behind the walls and doors of a house will detect the signal being released and will transmit it to the relay box which will be held beside the car. The vehicle will believe the relay box is the key as it has picked up the signal being emitted from the key in the car owner’s house, so will unlock the car as a result – a clean sweep!
However, steps can be taken to reduce the risk of losing your vehicle whilst you catch up on your sleep:
• Switch off/disable the Comfort Access which will turn the keyless system to a lock where the car key will physically need to be put into the ignition
• Purchase a Ghost Immobiliser
• Install a tracking device, so if the worst should happen your car can be tracked on its illegal journey
• Make sure the car keys are away from windows and doors, so its emitting signal cannot be detected
