2: Locating the dipstick
Open your bonnet and look for the dipstick – this should be of a bright colour, usually yellow or orange in colour. Pull the dipstick out of its tube.
3: Cleaning the dipstick
Before you check your oil level you need to clean your dipstick, to do so use the rag or the cloth to wipe off all the oil.
4: Checking the oil level
Check your motor oil every so often. Push the dipstick back into its tube ensuring it is clean. The make sure it clicks into place or reaches the very bottom. The pull the dipstick out again. The oil level should be between the upper and lower marks on the indicator portion of the dipstick.
5: Topping up the oil
Topping up the oil is very simple however easy to get wrong so you must ensure that you do it correctly. Pull the dipstick back out of its tube and see if it’s running lower than the indicator. If its nothing to worry about but it should be exactly halfway across the indicator. Open the oil filler cap and only top up a small amount. Oil top up varies per car and model so please look in your owner’s manual. Once you have topped up the oil, put the oil filler cap on and the dipstick in. Turn on the engine over and turn the engine off after a few minutes, this will give you an accurate reading. Overfilling the oil causes leaks so take your time.
