The Canister-shaped fuel filter made up of cartridges, which are in turn made up of many layers of filter paper, is located within a car’s fuel line inside the internal combustion engine. It plays a crucial role in keeping a car running without a hitch through screening the passing fuel, and sieving out abrasive debris that can become troublesome if allowed to filtrate into the fuel pump and its injectors.
From extensive usage of any type of filter over a period will become clogged, so will need to be replaced to keep things working at an optimum level. A vehicle’s fuel filter is no exception, and will need to be replaced approximately between every 20,000 and 40,000 miles, according to sources. However, if not replaced, the clogged filter will restrict the amount of fuel being drawn through the engine, resulting in a dip in the vehicle’s overall performance and causing potential damage of the fuel pump and injectors. Injection systems in modern vehicles have very tight resistances, so any abrasive debris or other contaminants affecting its workings could have a costly consequence. They function by spraying a rigid amount of fuel at a specific angle into the intake manifold. Any contaminants present in the fuel can block or destroy the injector’s nozzles.
Through changing your fuel filter (or having it changed), will maintain maximum engine performance, keep fuel injectors clean, and prevent engine misfires.
However, a clogged fuel filter will sound off the following signs:
• The engine will fail to start
• Difficulty in getting the engine to fire up
• The vehicle stalling
• Hesitating engine
• Varying performance at different speeds
If your vehicle is experiencing any the above difficulties, it is highly recommended that either yourself, or local garage, replaces the fuel filter, which is a cheaper solution to a costly alternative of a replacement fuel pump.
